six others. ktvu's ktvu brian flores at lincoln high school where students are mourning the loss of their classmates. >> reporter: good afternoon. we understand they held a special ceremony for kevin san. news media not allowed in the school but students say it's a different type of mood today considering now we know who the main suspect is. this is 58-year-old jennie zhu, the woman accused by police of traveling at a high rate of speed for several blocks. they say close to 80 miles per hour before she crashed her silver mercedes into a mini van that killed 16-year-old kevin san and injured his mother and sister along with three others in another car in san francisco. we have not been able to confirm she was -- we have been able to confirm she was taken into custody on bail after the incident but posted bail, was released on saturday. 11:00 a.m. we did stop by her house but nobody answered the door. neighbors say they barely knew her. it's not clear when her arraignment will be but she faces vehicular manslaughter charges. police also say she was not under the influence of drugs

at an alarmingly high rate and it's costing the state a billion dollars. ktvu's jeanine de la vega joining us live in santa cruz where the truancy rate is particularly high. >> santa cruz county ranked in the top three for having the highest truancy rate in the state. we don't know the exact numbers at this particular school. we do know truancy starts as early as elementary school. in a new report released today, state attorney general pamela harris says taken dance in schools in california -- attendance in schools in california is at a crisis level. the department of education finds one out of every five elementary schoolchildren were reported to be truant in the 2011 to 1212 school year. a student is considered truant if they're absent or tardy by more than 30 minutes without a valid excuse three times in a school year. studies find that students who miss school at an early age are more likely to struggle academically and drop out entirely once they're older. schools are funded based on school attendance and research shows school districts lose 1.4 billion a year because of truancy. the cost is

fire. ktvu tara moriarty is live in the oakland hills. there is a red flag warning out there. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. the wind gusts knocked down trees here. really creating headaches for people who live here in the oakland hills. if you take a look behind me, you can see this tree is blocking the roadway. crews should be arriving a little bit later this morning to remove it. the red flag warning is in effect for spots around 1500 feet. firefighters from alameda county were really busy overnight. gust got up to 50 miles an hour in the oakland hills. toppled trees. snagged wires. skyline boulevard sparking spot fires. pg&e had to cut the power. parts of alameda, santa cruz above 1,000 feet are part of this red flag zone. people want people to call 911 if you see smoke today. something sparks it could go up quickly. gusts 30-45 miles an hour. that is a reversal from the normal wind pattern. barbecuing in parks effected by the warning are prohibited. we were told by a city worker that crews will be there for hours. also highway 13 in lincoln there is a tree bloc

, the man accused of stabbing this fan to death remains a free man. alex savage, ktvu news. >>> a good samaritan was stabbed while trying to help someone. he saw a group of people fighting here high street. he pulled over and tried to help but the group turned on him. he is being treated for multiple stab wounds. >>> police say two men who tried to rob a bay area television news crew at gunpoint are now behind bars in san francisco. the confrontation took place around 8:00 last night. armed men were trying to arm a kron4 reporters when the security guard opened fire. one of the suspects was wounded in the leg. the news crew was not hurt. police identified the robbery suspects as armani mcfarland and john woods. both are 19 years old. >>> pge says it is making progress on a power outage that affected 2,000 customers in west oakland. 166 customers are still without power. the outage started at 5:30 this afternoon with a downed power line. a crew is on the scene to repair that line. >>> also in oakland, the focus today was on two high profile murder cases that remain unsolved. patti lee

the city's 18th homicide of the year. ktvu channel 2 reporter, alex savidge is at the scene of the deadly shooting with new information from a witness. >> reporter: good morning. this 18-year-old victim was shot through the neck according to a neighbor. he collapsed right here in the doorway of this apartment unit. he died right here. the shooter in this case who opened fire fired quite a few rounds towards this apartment building. you can see one bullet here that went through the front window. a few doors down, i want to show you how lucky another neighbor was. look at this. the bullet hit the barbecue grill right -- that was sitting in front of his window. the man was inside when this happened. thankfully the bullet stopped in the grill. there was a round that went through the windshield of a car that was parked here in this complex. the deadly shooting happened last night just after 7:00 at this complex on the 1300 block of santa clara street. several shots were fired. police say the teenager in this case was clearly targeted although investigators are not sure what the motive was here

moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. >>> 7:05. just hours ago, a san jose house was engulfed in flames. flames and smoke were shooting through the roof by the time firefighters got there. but everyone inside got out safely. now, ktvu's janine de la vega is live outside the home right now to show us the damage and also tell us what firefighters found inside. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. as you can see the home is still standing. much of the damage occurred in the attic where firefighters found a shrine with lights. there's damage to that room and all of the prayer items inside were destroyed. firefighters arrived and found flames coming out of the home near virginia. four people were inside the home when it started at 3:30 a.m. but were able to escape. the homeowner called 911 after hearing a crackling sound coming from the attic and seeing the fire. crews were able to knock down the flames within 2020 minutes and save the home -- 20 minutes and save the home. fire officials say it appears the fire started in the attic where a prayer room was set up w
